AI Could Help Identify Early Skin Cancer

Newly developed technology uses artificial intelligence (AI) to help detect melanoma skin cancer earlier than current methods and to help reduce the number of unnecessary biopsies. The AI-based method employs machine-learning software to analyze images of skin lesions and to provide doctors with objective data on telltale biomarkers of melanoma. More...

Immunoassay May Simplify Screening for Liver Cancer

Researchers have developed a highly portable, low-cost immunoassay technology that enables low limits of detection (LoD) by combining solid-phase microextraction membranes, gold nanoparticle labels, and surface-enhanced Raman scattering. Their prototype device successfully measured a liver cancer biomarker at LoD within only ~2 minutes. The team is also working to lower the cost to ~ USD 3 per test. The assay can likely be easily modified to detect infectious diseases such as tuberculosis, malaria, and dengue fever. More...

Fecal Immunochemical Test Detects Cancer and Polyps

The most commonly used noninvasive test for colorectal cancer (CRC) screening has been the guaiac fecal occult blood test (gFOBT). The fecal immunochemical test (FIT) detects CRC and colorectal polyps with higher levels of sensitivity than the gFOBT, and may be more acceptable to patients. More...

Molecular Blood Test Developed for Kidney Cancer

Kidney cancer is usually caught because of the symptoms a patient develops, but it is also possible for kidney cancer to be asymptomatic, with tumors growing quite large before causing pain or other noticeable problems. More...

Gene Expression Profiling Validated for Uveal Melanoma

Uveal melanoma is a cancer of the eye involving the iris, ciliary body, or choroid (collectively referred to as the uvea). Tumors arise from the pigment cells (melanocytes) that reside within the uvea giving color to the eye. More...

Immune Infiltration Test Predicts Cancer Relapse Risk

Estrogen receptor-positive (ER+) subtype accounts for about 80% of all breast cancers, the most common cancer in women. At diagnosis, the majority of ER+ patients have a good prognosis if treated with endocrine therapy. More...

New Molecular Test Identifies Colorectal Cancer

Colorectal cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths worldwide, with more than 600,000 deaths each year. Among individuals undergoing treatment for the disease, recurrence occurs in 30% to 50% of all cases. The majority of these cases present in the first two to three years following initial diagnosis and treatment. More...
