Kits Designed for Evaluating Oxidative Stress

An expanded range of assay kits has been developed for the detection and quantification of oxidative stress biomarkers and antioxidants.

Accurate, simple oxidative stress kits are now available from Amsbio (Abingdon, Oxon, UK) to analyze biomarkers of DNA, lipid, and protein oxidative modification in biologic samples. High sensitivity assays for 8-oxo dG (8-OHDG), nitrotyrosine, protein carbonyl, malondialdehyde, 8-isoprostane, and superoxide dismutase are delivered ready-to-use, giving highly reproducible results.

The new kits combine high sensitivity, the convenience of a 96-well format colorimetric assay and the trust of being well cited in scientific literature. Because researchers typically run many samples, the superoxide dismutase, glutathione reductase, and glutathione assay kits are supplied with multiple plates for high throughput use.

Generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) by environmental factors such as ultraviolet radiation and cigarette smoking is directly responsible for the detrimental effects of oxidative stress. To counteract the effects of ROS in vivo, there are a number of distinct antioxidant mechanisms in place within the cell, such as superoxide dismutase, catalase, ascorbic acid, and glutathione. Oxidative stress and associated damage to cellular lipids, proteins, and DNA occur when these compensatory mechanisms fail to deal with the increasing loads of ROS. Elevated levels of ROS contribute to a decline in cellular function, and they have been reported to coincide with pathologies including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and neurologic disorders.
