New HPLC Equipment Provides Greater Research Flexibility

A series of new high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) columns and a new column oven are now available for analytical and research scientists whose work demands the latest generation laboratory equipment.

Thermo Fisher Scientific Inc. (Milford, MA, USA) recently began marketing five new phases of HPLC columns in their Hypersil Gold line, which increases the number of different columns available to 11. All the phases use the same backbone of pure silica to deliver outstandingly symmetrical peak shapes, regardless of the compound or mode of analysis.

In detail, the new phases are (1) Hypersil GOLD C4, a low hydrophobicity column with short alkyl chain length. This has the effect of shortening retention, making the column ideal for reversed phase separations of analytes such as proteins and peptides. (2) Hypersil GOLD Amino columns, which are well suited to the analysis of sugars and carbohydrates, demonstrating excellent properties in three modes: weak anion exchange, reversed, and normal phases. (3) Hypersil GOLD AX, which is ideal for the separation of proteins, peptides, other anionic species, and polar molecules, and can be used as both an anion exchange column and for HILIC (hydrophilic interaction chromatography) separations. (4) Hypersil GOLD SAX is a highly stable quaternary amine strong anion exchange column, designed for aqueous mobile phase. It is ideally suited for use with smaller organic molecules, including nucleotides and organic acids. (5) Hypersil GOLD Silica is a powerful and efficient tool for the analysis of nonpolar and moderately polar organic compounds using normal phase LC.

To complement the new chromatography columns Thermo Scientific recommends the new Column Oven. The Column Oven comes in two specifications enabling the user to choose the most appropriate model for his/her specific application. The Column Oven 200 is capable of accommodating up to four analytical HPLC columns with lengths up to 150 mm, while the Column Oven 300 is able to contain as many as four analytical columns with lengths to 250 mm. The temperature control unit is designed for simple manual control of the column temperature or alternatively, optional drivers can be used to control the Column Oven through the instrument software.
