The first European scientific conference dedicated to advances in laboratory automation was given high marks by both participants and exhibitors.

The European Lab Automation (ELA) conference was held in Hamburg, Germany, from June 30 – July 1, 2011. More...
More than 1,500 scientists attended the conference, which also played host to over 150 commercial exhibitors.

The conference was divided into 10 distinct tracks, which presented the attendees with a vast amount of useful and relevant scientific content across a range of applications within the broad field of laboratory automation. The tracks included advances in biodetection and biosensors; advances in microarray technology; advances in protein crystallography; advances in separation technology; the European Agrigenomics Conference, which responded to the great interest in genetically engineered plants to optimize yields and their use in biofuels, as well as on the alteration of certain genes to increase plant resistance towards disease and infection; Lab-on-a-Chip European Congress, which was designed to review existing and new life science applications of microfluidic technologies; Next-Gen Sequencing Europe Conference; Screening Europe Conference, which dealt with high throughput and high content screening; and the World Biobanking Summit.

Ken Browne, the organizer of the event and director of Select Biosciences (Sudbury, United Kingdom) said, “We are delighted with the success of the first ELA conference and exhibition and have received some fantastic feedback from vendors and delegates alike. We are aiming to fill the need for a pan-European Automation event, and establish ELA as the forum for combining scientific content with up-to-date technology. As such, we have already booked the date for the second ELA conference and hope to continue its success.”

The next ELA conference is scheduled for Hamburg (Germany) on May 30- 31, 2012.
