Sample Collection Kit Selected for Celiac Disease Test

A sample collection kit has been selected for a saliva-based genetic test dedicated to celiac disease.

Diagnosis of celiac disease is challenging because the symptoms often resemble other diseases. Celiac disease affects nearly 3 million Americans but only about 100,000 are diagnosed. Laboratory tests help doctors diagnose the disease so that patients can take steps to manage their diet and prevent complications.

MyCeliacID is a specialized DNA saliva test that detects the genes DQ2/DQ8 that are specific to celiac disease. The test provides an estimate of an individual's risk of developing the disease. Oragene•DNA is ideal for the genetic testing service and solves sample collection challenges inherent in traditional collection methods. The traditional methods are costly and invasive, or do not provide enough high-quality DNA to enable the determination of the underlying genetic cause of health conditions such as celiac disease. Oragene•DNA offers easy and noninvasive self-collection of saliva samples from large numbers of individuals, as well as delivering high quality DNA.

MyCeliacID is available in most parts of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico and can be ordered online. In order to complete the test, a MyCeliacID kit, which includes the Genotek (Ottawa, ON, Canada) Oragene•DNA sample collection device, is sent to an individual's home where a small saliva sample is collected and returned by mail to Prometheus' Lab (San Diego, CA, USA) for analysis. Test results can be accessed online via a secure link, usually within 7 days from receipt of the saliva sample.

DNA Genotek focuses on providing biologic sample collection products. The Oragene•DNA self-collection kit, the company's lead product, is the easiest way to collect and preserve large amounts of DNA from saliva.
