Protein Identification Platform To Be Installed in China

A software platform for the identification and characterization of proteins and peptides from mass spectrometry (MS) data is to be installed in China.

Called Phenyx, the platform was specifically designed to meet the demands of high-throughput MS data analysis and dynamic results assessment while providing a flexible user experience and adaptable architecture to instill confidence in results assessment.

Geneva Bioinformatics (GeneBio; Geneva, Switzerland) SA and the Chinese State Key Laboratory of Proteomics (Beijing, China) have announced an agreement that GeneBio's Phenyx protein identification platform will be installed on the Chinese State Key Laboratory of Proteomics' High Performance Computing Cluster (32 nodes).

The director of the Chinese State Key Laboratory of Proteomics, Prof. Fuchu He, is also co-chair of the Human Proteome Organization's Human Liver Proteome Project (HUPO HLPP). The license agreement is a further link between GeneBio and numerous HUPO projects, including the Proteomics Standards Initiative and the HUPO Brain Proteome Project.

"We are very pleased to be working with GeneBio and the SIB [Swiss Institute of Bioinformatics] and believe Phenyx to be the right platform for our cluster,” said Prof. Yunping Zhu of the Chinese State Key Laboratory of Proteomics. "Our laboratory is keen to provide the best results possible to our community, and for this it was obvious that the addition of Phenyx's capabilities was mandatory. The quality of the identification results together with the suite of features the software provides, amongst which features the possibility to compare results from all major search engines, were very important factors in our decision.”

The Phenyx platform can be used for clinical applications if a diagnostic test needs mass spectrometry applications and an MS/MS-based peptide and protein identification tool. Therefore, if the instrument is used in a product ion scan mode (MS/MS), it will be able to infer or validate the presence of a given diagnostic peptide.

Geneva Bioinformatics (GeneBio) SA is a bioinformatics company providing the life science community with proteomics software that bridges the gap between information gathering and knowledge generation. Its expertise is focused on protein identification and characterization as well as proteome imaging, offering clients and partners the high degree of specialization essential to proteomics research.

The Chinese State Key Laboratory of Proteomics focuses on the basic application and research of proteomics. It is the only state key laboratory in the field of proteomics in China. Scientific interests include the proteome and functional network of key tissue/organ of human, proteomics study of key diseases, systems biology based on proteomics, and novel techniques of proteomics.
